Experience with Flythomascook? - squash in canary wharf

We are on the Canary Islands next week, and book our flights FlyThomasCook. I read reviews saying that the seats are uncomfortable, very close together and legs broken. When I tried to update legroom, I was surprised to see that it costs 50 pounds!
Has anyone advice on how to negotiate great seats at check-in? Has anyone flown with them lately? The comments are correct?
